Top Pizza Places in the U.S Post-Pandemic

Is there a food more widely adored than pizza? There are practically endless possibilities when it comes to how you can make and enjoy pizza, so it’s no wonder that pizza chains are among the most visited restaurants in the U.S., even during and after a pandemic.

Here are the top pizza places in the U.S. you should know about. We made sure to include information on how each restaurant is continuing to operate in response to COVID-19 so you can know what to expect the next time you find yourself craving a delicious slice of pizza.

Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut Logo

Pizza Hut is a chain with more than 18,000 restaurants worldwide. It is one of the most popular international pizza chains because of its affordability, convenience, and many menu options.

Dozens of Pizza Hut Locations temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of other restaurants closed their dining rooms for eat-in services but continued to offer carry-out and delivery. To protect the safety of their team members as well as their customers, Pizza Hut introduced contactless options for delivery, carryout, or curbside pickup.

In addition to pizza, Pizza Hut’s menu includes pasta, wings, and desserts. In January of 2021, the pizza brand brought back a fan favorite from the 90s: The Edge. The Edge is a thin-crust pizza with toppings loaded all the way to the edge. If you are in the mood for something different, there are plenty of other menu options to choose from or you can create your own.

Dominos

Dominos Logo

Domino’s Pizza is an American multinational pizza restaurant chain with 17,800 stores in more than 90 countries.  For the first few decades after its launch, Domino’s focused on simple, convenient pizza. It wasn’t until 1992 that the chain introduced its first non-pizza menu item: breadsticks. Since then, the company has added thin- and pan-crust pizzas and flavored crusts, as well as buffalo wings, boneless chicken, and several dessert items. In 2008, Domino’s launched a line of oven-baked sandwiches and instantly became the largest sandwich delivery company, a title they still claim today.

Domino’s is another one of the few success stories to come out of the pandemic. CEO Richard Allison credits the chain’s success to focusing on franchisees and employees. As businesses across the country were forced to close their doors, Domino’s introduced its first new pizza in decades: the cheeseburger pizza. In a partnership with Nuro, the chain launched autonomous delivery and continued offering contactless delivery.

Papa John’s

Papa John’s Logo

Papa John’s is the fourth-largest pizza delivery restaurant chain in the United States with over 5,199 locations, 4,456 of which are franchises, in the U.S. and 44 countries worldwide. The company was founded on the desire to offer pizza made with better ingredients. The main ingredients used to make a Papa John’s pizza are free from MSG, fillers in the meat toppings, BHA, BHT, cellulose, and partially hydrogenated oils. The slogan “Better ingredients. Better Pizza” is still being used by Papa John’s today.

Papa John’s is credited as being the first for creating and marketing a dip specifically made for pizza. The brand’s popular garlic dipping sauce has been included with every pizza ever sold by Papa John’s, since its founder, John Schnatter, first made it in 1984. As of 2021, the Papa John’s menu includes dozens of pizzas – including a “create your own” option – as well as breadsticks and desserts. Their newest product release was the Papadia – a twist on the flatbread sandwich that is available in five different varieties plus a “create your own” version.

In response to health concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic, Papa John’s introduced contactless delivery. They continued to promote in-app and online ordering, while relying on delivery and carry-out services for their customers.

Papa Murphy’s

Papa Murphy’s Logo

Papa Murphy’s unique business model has helped it remain one of the most popular pizza chains in the U.S. The company claims that its take-and-bake business model guarantees fresher ingredients and more control for the customer.

Rather than using freezers or pre-packaged ingredients, they make their dough from scratch, shred their cheese in-house, and chop their veggies by hand. Customers can then choose their own crust, sauce, and toppings, and then take the pizza home to bake it whenever is most convenient for them.

Papa Murphy’s adopted several protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic. They offer several ordering options like

  • Online ordering with ‘Contactless Express Pickup’
  • Curbside delivery to limit person-to-person contact
  • Contactless delivery (orders are sealed and left at your door)
  • Drive-thru pickup (where available)

In addition to their unlimited pizza buffet, Cicis’ pizzas are available through pickup and delivery. They recently added the Giant Pizza to the delivery and pickup menu. As for dine-in services, Cicis began implementing safety protocols that would protect the health of customers and team members. Once assembled, each pizza is placed in a gas-fired pizza oven that maintains a temperature of 700 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit.
