The Best Pizza in Sacramento, CA: Top 5

Love it or hate it, Sacramento is a city that’s got quite an impressive food scene. While it does seem to be something of a tension point for Californians, I’m bound by no such rules. As such, it felt right to talk pizza — specifically, the best pizza in Sacramento. There are a lot of incredible local spots in lil’ old Sacramento, so, let’s take a peek!

And if you’re still looking for a spot that’s new to you, check out our honorable mentions below. They’re our picks for unique spots that, while not the best, bar none, are special enough in how they do things to deserve a bit of recognition.

The Best Pizza in Sacramento: Top 3

Majka Pizzeria and Bakery

With over 1.5 million acres of farmland in spitting distance of Sacramento, the city is known as the “Farm-to-Fork Capital” for a reason. This is a fact that Majka Pizzeria and Bakery knows all too well, focusing on fresh, local produce and a seasonally rotating menu of fantastic pizzas, breads, and pastries.

Majka makes a point of using their own mother starter, meaning that the yeast in their baked goods is 100% proprietary, serving to cut out low-quality commercial yeasts. Additionally, they use organic, sustainably-grown produce in tandem with whole grains to create something that’s both delicious and nutritious — something of a standout in the world of pizza.

If you, like me, became a foodie by chasing the dragon of your grandmothers’ cooking, Majka may just be the place for you. They serve up good ol’ fashioned comfort food in an absolutely adorable setting, and frankly, it’s too tasty to pass up.

Federalist Pizza

Federalist Pizza is another hometown name that may be familiar to Sacramento natives. They’re a from-scratch wood-fired joint that specializes in Neapolitan-style pies — though that’s far from their only offering. Those who prefer a crispier pie more akin to Sicilian or Detroit-style pies will immediately fall for their deep dish pies, and for good reason.

The thought process behind Federalist’s food is simple: craft food that their chefs would be happy to serve to their families and bring the guests in on the snackage. Using locally sourced almond wood, their ovens impart a unique flavor that, while not ground-breaking, deserves recognition for its local roots.

As for drinks, Federalist just so happens to also be a fantastic taproom, serving up local cold brews day and night. And for those who don’t drink, they have their own brew of specialized sangria alongside craft sodas, local kombucha, and fresh-made lemonade. For some, this may be an afterthought — but I’ve found that the accouterments to pizza are often just as important as the pie itself. After all, there are few things better on a hot day than a slice and an ice-cold drink.

Masullo

Masullo is a gorgeous building that’s just about always packed, and for good reason. They’re another farm-to-table, from-scratch joint that serves up fantastic Italian meals — and yes, that includes pizza. While pizza isn’t the only game at Masullo, it is noteworthy. They use a wood-fired brick oven to serve up classic Neapolitan pies with an assortment of local, fresh produce and meat.

Beyond pizza, Masullo offers daily pasta dishes that are also made in-house every day, leading to a unique combination of higher-end dishes and classic pizza. While I would argue that this makes them an excellent spot for date night, they’re also perfect for just about any excuse you can find to sample the snacks.

From antipasto to dessert, there truly are few spots in the area like Masullo. Whether you’re there for a cheeky sweet treat (cocoa whiskey balls, anyone?) or a full multi-course meal, you’ll be in excellent hands. And, for what it’s worth, their patio area is genuinely adorable — do with that what you will.

As mentioned above, it’s time to highlight a couple of unique spots that just barely avoided making our top list. Below are two incredibly special spots that are, put frankly, deserving of their own article to highlight the awesome things they do. So — what’s on the menu this time?

La Trattoria Bohemia

La Trattoria Bohemia is a relatively well-known spot to locals, but it’s also a criminally under-recognized joint by most out-of-towners. See, Trattoria isn’t just a pizza place; while they do serve incredibly delicious Neapolitan pies with a selection of quite unique ingredients, they’re also a Czech restaurant.

Yes, you read that right! La Trattoria Bohemia is arguably one of the most unique restaurants in the state, serving a combination of traditional Czech and Italian meals, finding a great middle-ground for nights where you simply can’t just pick a restaurant for date night.

Old Soul Co.

First things first — Old Soul Co. isn’t technically a pizza joint. Yes, they serve pizza, but they’re actually a cafe and bakery before all else. This means that their pizza menu rotates quite regularly, and also means that those who (like me) love a good espresso will feel right at home. My personal favorite location of four, the Weatherstone building, is so full of character and history that it’s worth a visit if only to gawk. You see, the Weatherstone building was home to the city’s first independent coffee house and is built out of an old horse barn.

Between the bare brick, delicious espresso, and fantastic baked goods (including pizza), there’s really no way to go wrong with a visit to Old Soul Co.
