Did you know that Hawaiian pizza actually originated in Canada? It’s true, yet people tend to spend more time debating whether pineapple belongs on pizza rather than discussing how misleading it is to call pineapple and ham pizza “Hawaiian” pizza.
Controversy aside, chances are that if you’re looking for a homemade Hawaiian Pizza recipe, pineapple is on your list of approved pizza toppings. This recipe uses the perfect combination of homemade pizza dough, scratch-made sauce, and infamous toppings to create a flavorful pie. In fact, this pizza is so good, you just may be able to convince naysayers that pineapple does belong on pizza after all.
1Fresh pineapple, peeled, cored, cubedOr two 20-oz cans pineapple chunks, drained and patted to remove excess juice
1lbHam cubes
3cupsMozzarellaShredded
2tbspExtra-virgin olive oil
Instructions
For the dough
In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of an electric stand mixer, combine the sugar, yeast, and ½ cup of warm water, then whisk until the yeast has dissolved completely.
Leave the mixture to rest for 5-10 minutes, then add the rest of the warm water, olive oil, and salt.
With the mixer at low speed, slowly add in half of the flour and mix until combined.
Mix in the rest of the flour and then knead at medium-low speed until a smooth, elastic, and slightly sticky dough is formed.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave it to rest in a warm place until the dough has doubled in size, approximately 1-2 hours.
For the sauce
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl then set aside.
For the pizza
Divide the dough in half.
Lightly grease two 12” round pizza pans.
Using your hands, press and shape each section of dough into a 10” to 12” disk, then transfer to the prepared pizza pans.
Loosely drape plastic wrap or a kitchen towel over the crust and let it rise for at least two hours.
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees (or appropriate temperature if using a real pizza oven)
Place the bare pizza crusts in the oven for about 10 minutes to set.
Remove the crusts from the oven and spread one cup of pizza sauce over each round.
Scatter the pineapple and ham over the pizza sauce, then top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Place the pizzas back in the oven and bake for another 15 minutes, until the cheese has melted and begun to turn brown.
