The Ooni Pro is one of several Ooni Pizza Ovens designed to bring restaurant-quality pizza to your backyard. But what is it about the Ooni Pro that makes it a must-have for pizza lovers? We take an in-depth look at the Ooni Pro to reveal the good, the bad, and all the other details that just may catch your eye.

People are spending more time at home and less time eating at restaurants. But cooking at home doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the flavor and authenticity of your pizzas. The pizza ovens from Ooni give you the ability to make restaurant-quality pizza at home.

Ooni pizza ovens are flying off store shelves and selling out online. Thousands of people have discovered the excitement of Ooni pizzas ovens and their impressive capabilities. If you’re considering purchasing an at-home pizza oven, buying an Ooni is one of the best decisions you can make. There are several Ooni pizza ovens to choose from, but we’ll share why we think the Ooni Pro is the way to go.

The Ooni Pro Pizza Oven

The Ooni Pro is a multi-fuel pizza oven and the largest oven manufactured by Ooni. While the Pro is the least portable of all Ooni pizza ovens, it still fits comfortably on a small table and can be moved if necessary or desired.

The Ooni Pro is the largest Ooni pizza oven and is compatible with wood, charcoal, or gas. It heats quickly, cooks fast, and offers optimum temperature control.

The Good & Bad

Good 👍

  • Versatility – With several fuel options, a size that makes it transportable, and top-notch temperature control, the Ooni Pro is a very versatile oven.
  • Performance – The Ooni Pro heats up quickly, cooks fast, and is easy to use. You can use your Ooni Pro to cook pizza, meat, vegetables, bread, and more, to enjoy like never before.
  • Accessories – Ooni has a long list of accessories that you can use along with your Ooni Pro. From alternative fuel attachments to cast iron pans and pizza peels, you can transform your backyard into your very own pizzeria.

Bad 👎

  • Price – The Ooni Pro is the most expensive pizza oven sold by Ooni. It will cost you $599, so it’s not a cheap appliance. It functions just as well, if not better, than an authentic brick pizza oven that would cost even more to build in your backyard, but it’s not the most affordable product.

Setting Up the Ooni Pro Pizza Oven

One of the many perks of buying an Ooni pizza oven is how simple it is to set up. To set up your Ooni Pro:

  1. Open up the four table legs on the main body.
  2. Align the chimney and use the clip to securely attach the chimney to the main body.
  3. Make sure the holes in the stone guard are aligned with the bolts found at the front of the oven.
  4. Secure the chimney in place by tightening the included flange nuts. These nuts can be tightened by hand. The stone guard makes sure the baking stones are secure inside the oven.
  5. Put all four baking stones in the oven. Each stone sits on four bolts found at the base of the oven.
  6. Attach either the pizza oven door or the baking door. Attach the fuel hatch door at the rear of the oven and install the charcoal/wood burner by inserting it into the back of the oven.

The entire setup process shouldn’t take longer than five minutes. If you run into any trouble, the following instructional video provided by Ooni can guide you through the process.

SummaryThe Ooni Pro was designed to be convenient and user-friendly. Set up takes less than five minutes, regardless of the fuel type you are using.

Design and Build Quality

The most notable difference between the Ooni Pro and other Ooni pizza ovens like the Ooni Koda is the size. The Ooni Pro is the largest pizza oven sold by Ooni. The 18-inch cooking surface Is significantly larger than the Ooni Koda, Ooni Fyra, and even the new Karu 16. This extra space gives you more than enough room to cook a pizza as well as meats or vegetables in a large cast-iron skillet. Plus, the Ooni Pro has an inside clearance of 6 inches which gives you plenty of room to comfortably fit casseroles and more inside.

Despite being the largest Ooni pizza oven, it’s still portable. The Ooni Pro weighs 48.5 pounds, so it isn’t light but it’s certainly manageable. If you can safely maneuver a gadget that weighs 50lbs, then you will be pleased to know that you can take your Ooni with you whenever you want to share the joy of delicious homemade pizza with others. However, it’s easily the least-portable of all Ooni pizza ovens so if you decide to take it on the go, proceed with caution. You would do best to take advantage of the “security loop” – a unique feature that lets you secure the oven to whatever surface it is placed on while also preventing movement while using the oven.

The body of the Ooni Pro is made out of brushed 430 stainless steel with ceramic fiber insulation. Three legs provide sturdy support. Aesthetically, the Ooni Pro is sleek and modern. But more than that, its design allows the Ooni Pro to heat up quickly and retain heat. The double-walled design also reduces discoloration to the outer wall.

The Ooni Pro has a chimney with an adjustable lever so that you can adjust the airflow. When the lever is in the vertical position, the charcoal or wood burn hottest with maximum airflow. When the lever is moved to the horizontal position, airflow is reduced, therefore reducing the flame and temperature. You can also adjust the airflow with the ceiling vent on the inside of the oven.

The Ooni Pro comes with two doors: a baking door and a pizza door. The baking door has a glass window and a built-in thermometer. The baking door is great for retaining heat inside the oven, which is important when cooking meat or vegetables or baking bread. The pizza door has an opening in it that is large enough to slide your pizzas through when putting them in the oven or taking them out.

The Ooni Pro comes with four 15mm cordierite baking stones, which are thicker than the stones that come with the other Ooni pizza ovens.

SummaryThe 18-inch cooking surface of the Ooni Pro provides ample space for cooking large pizzas. The brushed stainless-steel body is insulated with ceramic fiber to give the oven a sleek design while effectively maintaining internal temperatures. The oven comes with two different doors and a chimney that make it easy to adjust the airflow and match your ideal cooking style.

Ooni Pro Performance

The performance of the Ooni Pro is nothing short of impressive. Whether you’re cooking pizzas, meat, vegetables, or bread, this versatile pizza oven gets the job done quickly.

Ooni promises that the Pro heats to cooking temperature in 20 minutes. If you prefer to cook at slightly lower temperatures, the preheating period is even shorter. And because it takes just 1-2 minutes for food to cook, you can have dinner on the table in well under 30 minutes.

To get the best results, you’ll want to start with raw ingredients. The heat is so intense that if you’re not careful, you can quickly burn whatever it is you are trying to make. Ooni lovers agree that the pizza oven works best when you use raw pizza dough or a cast iron pan to cook meat and vegetables.

Many users also suggest using an infrared thermometer to get the most accurate temperature reading, claiming that the built-in thermometer located in the door isn’t always the most accurate. This could be because of its placement. If you aren’t as concerned about getting the most precise temperature reading, then an extra thermometer isn’t necessary.

When cooking with the Ooni Pro, we found that the wood/charcoal burner does require a bit more work than other Ooni models, but it provides more versatility. If you already have charcoal or wood on hand, then you don’t have to worry about ordering pellets. However, if you can get your hands on the pellets and the attachment that lets you burn them, you will be impressed by their ease of use.

SummaryThe Ooni Pro reaches maximum temperatures in 20 minutes and cooks a full-sized pizza in under two minutes.  For the best results, consider using raw dough for your pizza or a cast-iron pan when cooking meat or vegetables.

Cooking with the Ooni Pro – Ease of Use

To cook with your Ooni Pro, you can choose between five fuel sources: charcoal and wood, only wood, only charcoal, wood pellets, and gas. This is a great feature because you can pick your fuel choice based on what you are cooking and how you want to cook it. However, please note that the Ooni Pro comes with the charcoal/wood burner but you will have to buy the gas burner or pellet burner separately.

It takes only 20 minutes for the Ooni Pro to preheat, which is about the same as a conventional gas oven. But unlike your common kitchen appliance, in those 20 minutes, the Ooni Pro reaches impressively high temperatures. At temperatures higher than 900 degrees, it’s no wonder the Ooni Pro churns out perfectly-cooked cuisine in two minutes or less. And yes, we use the general term “cuisine” because you can use the Ooni Pro to cook a lot more than just pizza.

Here are a few additional tips for cooking with your Ooni Pro:

  • Before cooking with your Ooni Pro for the first time, it is recommended that you let the oven run at the highest temperature for around 30 minutes, then let it cool and wipe it down. This will “season” your oven and give you an opportunity to get the hang of how it works.
  • While the Ooni Pro can be used to cook just about any pizza, to get the best results you should stick to thin dough and avoid piling on too many toppings. A thin base cooks more evenly and comes out crisp.
  • Because the back of the Ooni gets the hottest, you will want to spin the pizza as it cooks. When cooking at extremely high temperatures, food can burn quickly so you’ll want to pay attention to it.
  • As your Ooni Pro heats up, you may notice sizeable flames. For the most flavorful pizza, wait until the flames die down slightly.
  • Scrape the pizza stone after each use or your next pizza may stick and be difficult to remove.
SummaryCooking with the Ooni Pro is unique in that you can choose between five sources of fuel. Regardless of the type of fuel you use, the Ooni Pro reaches temperatures higher than 900 degrees in under 20 minutes. For the best results, rotate your pizza as it cooks.

How to Light the Ooni Pro When Cooking with Wood or Charcoal

Before you light your Ooni Pro, make sure that it is properly set up. Check that your Ooni is ready by removing the cap from the chimney. Then make sure the chimney and ceiling vents are open and install the door you want to use.

Next, remove the hatch and put a layer of charcoal or a stack of wood in the wood and charcoal burner. Then, light it up! You can use a gas blowtorch or Ooni Firestarters to get things going.

Once your fuel starts to burn, add more fuel to make sure you have enough to cook with. Then leave the Ooni Pro to preheat for 20 minutes. Monitor the fire and add more fuel as needed, but avoid adding too much fuel or you will smother the flame. Keep in mind that you can combine wood and charcoal for the most flavorful cooking experience and optimal flavor.

SummaryWhen cooking with charcoal, you need to first ensure that your Ooni Pro is properly set up. Then, when you’re ready, add the fuel and light it up! Just be sure to keep an eye on the fire and add more fuel as needed, but not so much that you smother the flame.

How to Light the Ooni Pro when Cooking with Gas

When cooking with gas, the first thing you want to do is make sure that you attach the pizza door to your Ooni Pro. Then, make sure the chimney- and ceiling vents are closed.

Remove the hatch to give yourself an unobstructed view of the burner so that you can easily tell when it is lit. Press and slowly turn the gas burner dial counter-clockwise until you hear a click. Keep the control knob pushed in and make sure the burner is lit. Hold in the control for five seconds after ignition. Then replace the hatch and leave your Ooni Pro to preheat.

SummaryThe most important step to remember when preparing your Ooni Pro to cook with gas is to attach the pizza door and make sure the chimney vent and ceiling vent is closed.

Cleaning Your Ooni Pro

As with just about any appliance or cooking device, you’ll want to take proper care of it to ensure it works optimally for a long time. To keep your Ooni Pro in good shape, you will want to clean it often.

Fortunately, the Ooni Pro does a fairly good job of keeping itself clean. Because the temperatures inside the oven run so hot, just about everything is burnt up, leaving you very little to clean. There will sometimes be leftover ash after cooking with wood or charcoal. If you notice ashes, crumbs, or residue inside your oven, wait until the oven cools down completely before cleaning. Depending on the temperature you used to cook with as well as the temperature outside, the Ooni Pro typically takes about an hour to cool completely. Once the oven has cooled, use a non-abrasive brush or wipe to sweep out the inside of your oven. To dispose of leftover ashes, remove the burner tray through the front of the oven and dump out the ashes.

To clean the outside of your Ooni Pro and keep it looking brand-new, use a small amount of stainless-steel cleaner, but make sure the product you use is non-abrasive.

SummaryBecause the temperatures inside the Ooni Pro run so hot, very little clean-up is required. If you notice ashes or other residue accumulating in your Ooni Pro, once the oven has cooled completely, use a non-abrasive brush or wipe to sweep it out.

About Ooni

The best pizza is made hot and fast in an oven that can handle extremely high temperatures. Before Ooni, you’d have to go to a restaurant or shell out thousands of dollars on a traditional, at-home pizza oven. But thanks to Ooni, that’s no longer the case.

Ooni was founded by husband-and-wife team Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland. Kristian enjoyed homemade pizzas but was frustrated by his inability to recreate restaurant-quality flavor at home. He recognized that high heat was a key component to the best-tasting pizza; high heat that his domestic oven couldn’t produce.

Kristian began looking for a backyard wood-fired pizza oven but was disappointed to find that the only products on the market were bulky and painfully expensive. Motivated by his disappointment, Kristian got to work, creating a number of sketches and prototypes. After testing numerous designs in his own backyard, Kristian created the world’s first-ever portable wood-fired pizza oven.

Kristian and Darina took the prototype and launched the first Ooni oven project on Kickstarter in November 2012. It didn’t take long for them to meet and exceed their funding goal. They quickly established an audience of interested patrons from all over the world. People couldn’t wait to get their hands on their own outdoor pizza oven that could cook a pizza in just 60 seconds. As support for Ooni continued to grow, so did media and retailer interest.

In the years since, Ooni has become a multi-award-winning business. Customers can choose from several oven models and accessories, including the Ooni Pro.

Overall Thoughts

You aren’t going to do much better than the Ooni Pro if you are looking for a premium, versatile, and high-quality pizza oven. It’s stylish and modern enough to act as a conversation piece and cranks out impressive, flavorful food in minutes. While the price tag isn’t one that everyone can afford, the Ooni Pro’s performance as well as the overall experience of using the Ooni Pro makes it worth every penny. Still not convinced? Review: 5/5

Update: One Year Later

After using the Ooni Pro for one year, here are the things we noticed:

  1. It took me a while before I got used to this oven. Since it's wood and not gas, there is a learning curve before getting comfortable with it.
  2. I find this oven to deliver identical results as a commercial-grade wood fire oven. The pizzas come out perfectly once you master the oven.
  3. While it's marketed as portable, I never moved from my back yard. At 68lbs, it's somewhat heavy to carry around. If you're looking for a portable oven, there are better alternatives out there. But if you're looking for an authentic oven, this is the one.
  4. While it does get sooty after each use, the stainless steel makes it very easy to clean. You can just wipe off the soot after it cools down.
  5. Get a heat-resistant glove and a flame gun. It will make your life easier when using this oven.
  6. Overall it's still one of the best ovens I have tried to date.
