Hands-on Review: Ooni Koda

Authentic Neapolitan-style pizza, made in your backyard in 20 minutes or less -- a bold claim from people who strive to sell portable pizza ovens. But when the Ooni Koda is put to the test, it not only does exactly as was promised but cranks out pizza so delicious you’ll have a hard time believing it wasn’t made in a pizzeria.

Ooni has been selling pizza ovens for years. In 2012, Ooni launched the world’s first portable gas pizza oven, forever changing the way people make pizza at home. About Ooni

Ooni was founded by Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland, a husband-and-wife team that previously ran an education company that encouraged innovation, creativity, and problem solving within school communities. It was their passion for problem-solving that inspired them to create a gadget that solved one of their own problems.

Kristian enjoyed making pizza but was frustrated by his inability to recreate the restaurant-quality flavor he craved. He recognized the key component that was missing: high heat. Kristian then quickly discovered that the backyard wood-fired pizza ovens on the market were not only painfully expensive but bulky and difficult to use.

Kristian got to work transforming his idea into the world’s first-ever portable wood-fired pizza oven and thus Ooni was born. Kristian and Darina took the prototype and launched the first Ooni oven project on Kickstarter in November 2012. Not only did they quickly surpass their funding goal, but Ooni also caught the eyes of millions of people across the globe, resulting in swarms of supporters as well as retailer and media interest.

There are now six different Ooni pizza ovens available.

Our thoughts

Overall, the Ooni Koda is a conveniently sized, portable, gas-powered oven that consistently churns out delicious pizza. Despite its smaller size, the Koda is still great for cooking other foods with an open flame, providing a flavor that you can’t get in an ordinary oven. While on the more expensive side, the Ooni Koda has proven time and time again to be worth every penny.

Update: One Year Later

Before the Ooni Koda was released, the Ooni Pro was our go-to pizza oven. The Ooni Pro transformed wood-fired cooking, so it was only a matter of time until Ooni unveiled a product that would have the same effect on the gas-fired pizza oven market. The Ooni Koda did just that. But after a full year of regular use, would the Ooni Koda be just as impressive? Here are my findings:

  1. It handles rain and snow just fine, but the black matte finish started losing some color. Make sure you get a cover if you're planning on leaving it outside.
  2. You have to turn down the heat once you insert the pizza; otherwise, the tight space will burn your pizzas. It might be a bit of a hassle at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll start making perfect pizzas.
  3. It's very lightweight and probably the best portable oven I have tried to this date; this is the main thing that influences me to give it such a high score.
