Hands-On Review: Ooni Koda 16

The Ooni Koda 16 is a gas-powered outdoor pizza oven from the multi-award-winning international brand Ooni. This portable pizza oven was designed to stone-bake 16-inch pizzas and flame-cook steaks, fish, vegetables, and more.

The Ooni Koda 16 Pizza Oven

The Ooni Koda 16 offers the convenience of cooking with gas and features a powerful, innovative L-shaped burner. The Koda 16 heats to a maximum temperature of 932 degrees Fahrenheit (500 C) in 20 minutes and can stone-bake fresh, flavorful pizza in just 60 seconds. The sleek design and durable construction match the high quality Ooni is known for.

Our First Impressions

  • There’s no assembly required with the Ooni Koda 16. The manual included in the box has instructions for assembly, but the setup was so minimal that the instructions weren’t needed. Just unfold the legs, place it on a stable outdoor surface, attach the hose to the oven and your propane tank, and you’re ready to go. This entire process, including unboxing the oven, took less than five minutes.
  • Moving pizza to and from the oven takes some practice. You will want to use a pizza peel, which isn’t included with the Koda 16.
  • The Ooni Koda 16 is slightly heavier than some of the other Ooni pizza ovens, like the Koda 12 and the Fyra 12. It weighs 40 pounds, so it isn’t lightweight, but it can still be moved and stored as needed. If you want a pizza oven that you can take with you on camping trips or to parties with friends and family, the Koda 16 is a great option.

The Good & Bad

Good 👍

  • Large cooking surface – The cordierite baking stone surface of the Ooni Koda 16 is large enough to fit up to 15-inch pizzas with plenty of extra room. A 16-inch pizza will fit as well, but you’ll have less room to turn the pizza as it cooks.
  • Arrives ready to use – The Ooni Koda 16 is ready out of the box. All you have to do is connect the oven to a propane tank to get started.
  • Ease of use – To preheat the Ooni Koda 16, you simply switch on the instant gas ignition and wait for it to heat up. Once the oven has reached cooking temperature, slide your pizza onto the cooking surface, turn the pizza a few times as it bakes, then remove it and enjoy. It really is that easy.

Bad 👎

  • There are more portable options out there – The Ooni Koda 16 weighs 40 pounds (18kg), so it isn’t as portable as other Ooni ovens like the Fyra or the Koda 12. However, it can still be moved around and the legs fold in to make transport easier.
  • Availability – The Ooni Koda 16 pizza ovens are currently out of stock. Ooni pizza ovens are extremely popular appliances and it can be hard to get your hands on one. Each time Ooni announces that their ovens are back in stock, they sell out quickly. You’ll have to act fast if you want to purchase one.
  • Thermometer/heat gauge not included – You will need to purchase a temperature gun for precise temperature measurements, otherwise you will have a hard time determining when the Ooni Koda 16 has reached cooking temperature.

What’s Included with the Ooni Koda 16

  • Ooni Koda 16 pizza oven body with folding legs
  • Cordierite stone baking board

Design and Build Quality

The Ooni Koda 16 is made from powder-coated steel and the body is insulated with ceramic fiber to better equip the oven for heat retention. The body of the oven holds up well to regular outdoor use, with little to no upkeep required. Its steel construction guarantees that this oven is built to last.

There is no oven door on the Ooni Koda 16, which means that some heat will escape and the space directly in front of the oven will get hot. But it also means you don’t have to fuss with a door when transferring or turning your pizza. There is also no chimney on the Koda 16 which makes it easier to transport and store.

Speaking of transport and storage, the Ooni Koda 16 is slightly heavy for a portable pizza oven. But even at 40 pounds, this oven is relatively easy to move. Simply fold in the legs and the Koda 16 is ready to travel or store.

The 16.7-inch cooking surface is spacious enough to easily fit a 12-inch, 14-inch, or 16-inch pizza. The interior of the oven is so large that you can see all sides of your pizza as it bakes to ensure it is cooking evenly.

The Ooni Koda 16 is designed so that all of its heat is redirected inwards. The L-shaped burner runs along the back and left side of the interior of the oven and creates a gorgeous waterfall effect. There is a metal guard that keeps you from burning your pizza by accidentally putting it too close to the flames, which is a nice touch, especially when trying to maneuver a large pizza.

SummaryThe Ooni Koda 16 features a powder-coated steel exterior and ceramic fiber-insulated body. It is heavy, yet still very portable, with legs that fold in and no door or chimney to fuss with. The oven’s interior is spacious with a cooking surface large enough to fit a 16-inch pizza.

Ooni Koda 16 Performance

The Ooni Koda 16 is capable of reaching temperatures up to 932 degrees Fahrenheit (500 degrees Celsius) so you can easily cook a fresh pizza in just 60 seconds. The heat and cooking speed of the Koda 16 is impressive, but it can take some practice to get used to.

The L-shaped flame of the Koda 16 is an innovative feature that provides a unique cooking experience. The key thing to remember when using the Ooni Koda 16 is that because of the L-shaped flame, the temperatures of the baking stones inside the oven vary. The closer the stone is to the flame, the hotter the stone is. Therefore, the closer your food is to the flame, the faster it cooks.

For an evenly-baked pizza, you will want to frequently turn the pizza so that each section spends time close to the flame. Otherwise, you will end up with a pizza that is burnt on one side and undercooked on the other. It can take a couple of tries to get it right, but in no time, you’ll find a technique that works right for you.

SummaryThe Ooni Koda 16 reaches a maximum temperature of 932 degrees Fahrenheit (500 degrees Celsius) in 20 minutes and cooks a fresh 16-inch pizza in just 60 seconds. Its unique L-shaped flame requires you to turn the pizza as it cooks for an even bake, which can take some practice.

About Ooni

Ooni is an international outdoor pizza oven company based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Ooni launched the world’s first portable wood-pellet pizza oven in 2012 and has since created an entire collection of high-temperature outdoor ovens designed for the average consumer.

The story of how Ooni was born begins with Kristian Tapaninaho and his wife Darina Garland. Kristian enjoyed making pizza at home but was frustrated by his inability to create pizzas with restaurant-quality flavor. He knew that high heat was the key component he was missing because his domestic oven wasn’t capable of reaching temperatures higher than 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kristian set out to find a backyard wood-fired pizza oven but found only expensive and bulky products. After numerous sketches, prototypes, and backyard tests, Kristian created the world’s first-ever portable wood-fired pizza oven.

Since then, Ooni has grown into a multi-award-winning business that sells pizza ovens and pizza oven accessories across the globe. The Ooni collection now includes several pizza oven models, including the Ooni Fyra 12, Ooni Pro, Ooni Karu 12, and the new Ooni Karu 16. Their pizza ovens run on wood, charcoal, and gas, so you can easily find a portable pizza oven that is right for you.

Overall Thoughts

The Ooni Koda 16 is frequently out of stock and sells out quickly each time stock is replenished. That fact alone speaks volumes about this incredibly popular gas-fueled pizza oven. It reaches high temperatures in a short amount of time and cooks flavorful, stone-baked pizza incredibly fast.

Whether you’re an amateur chef who simply wants to enjoy high-quality, homemade pizza or a professional chef looking for a reliable portable pizza oven, the Ooni Koda 16 is a must-have for a pizza night in your backyard.

Review: 4.5/5

Update: One Year Later

After having such a great experience with the Ooni Koda 12, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the Ooni Koda 16. And after a full year of cooking with the Koda 16, I’m more convinced than ever that it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made.

All the portable pizza ovens in the Ooni collection are impressive, but for an exclusively gas-powered pizza oven, the Ooni Koda 16 is remarkable.

Over the last 12 months, the Ooni Koda 16 has made cooking homemade pizzas effortless. The oven’s cooking chamber is large enough for a 16-inch pizza, which makes it easy to feed a crowd in no time. If you have a large family or a big group of friends, you know the importance of getting food on the table quickly. With the Ooni Koda 16, it’s never been easier.

Because of the L-shaped burner, it took some practice before I was able to get the most evenly cooked pizza. But after the first week, I was churning out perfect pies one after the other. All it took was a few turns of the pizza while it baked to ensure that each side of the pie spent some time near the flames. If the pizza sat too long, it would char one side and cause the entire pizza to cook unevenly. Once I got the hang of things, it was nothing short of easy, enjoyable cooking every time I fired up the Ooni Koda 16.
