The Best Pizza of Fairfield County, CT: Top 5

Whether you’re googling the best pizza of Fairfield County out of curiosity or insatiable hunger (I can relate), you’re in the right spot. Fairfield is a county full of history, and their restaurants are no different; some joints on this list have been around for just shy of 100 years, and others outright created a subgenre of pizza. In other words, no matter what kind of pie floats your boat, there’s a spot for you.

Now — let’s take a peek, shall we?

Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana

If you’re from the East Coast, chances are this is a name that needs no introduction. Founded in 1925, Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana is a small chain that reps the name of one of the oldest pizzerias in America. Founded by Italian Immigrant Frank Pepe shortly after serving in WW1, they became known as the spot for many locals and travelers for a classic slice of Neopolitan-style pizza.

Today is no different, with Pepe’s standing strong as a mainstay of the pizza community with, inarguably, some of the best pizza of Fairfield County — if not the States as a whole. Whether this comes from their true-to-tradition pizza ovens, their insistence on using top-tier toppings, or their delightfully charred, slightly chewy dough, I can’t say.

What I can say, though, is that their pies still deliver the same level of quality that they’re known for to this day. So, do yourself a favor and swing by this slice of classic Americana — and if you can’t do it soon, don’t worry; chances are they aren’t going anywhere.

Primo Pizza

Primo Pizza is my pick for the best pizza of Fairfield County by price. Their whole schtick is serving up delicious, well-made pies at a reasonably affordable price point, and it’s done wonders for their business. Rather than leaning into the hip, artsy trend of constant innovation, farm-to-table ingredients, and the like, they opted for the simple, proven approach — and it’s paid off.

While their pies won’t earn any Beard awards, nor highlights in trendy magazines, their food is precisely what it needs to be. Namely, it’s greasy, it’s cheesy, and it’s precisely what one needs after a long night.

Colony Grill Pizza

Colony Grill Pizza is something of a standout on this list for a few reasons. While they’re undoubtedly some of the best pizza of Fairfield County (and CT as a whole, for that matter), there’s more to their success than damn good pies. Specifically, though, they specialize in hot oil bar pies

This term may be somewhat unfamiliar, but the reality is that you’ve likely had many slices of this style without even knowing it. Do you know the greasy, almost deep-fried style of bar pizza you get on a night out? Covered in grease, thin enough to hold up on its own (similar to a New York pie), and generally incredibly crispy — if not outright burnt? That style is, in large part, thanks to Colony Grill Pizza and its Irish-American owner, .

Seeing as they’ve been around since 1935, it’s not really shocking to see Colony Grill mentioned here; they’re a mainstay to the community. But that doesn’t change the reality that this joint is the creator of something that we all know and love — a pizza designed to be eaten with beer in hand.

Nauti Dolphin

First things first — Nauti Dolphin has no website, so you’ll find their Instagram linked above instead. With that said, their whole thing is a nautical-themed pizza joint. Love it or hate it (I’m personally not a huge fan of themed joints as a whole), the one thing most people can agree on is that their pies are tasty as all getout.

While they didn’t quite make it to the top three in our list of the best pizza of Fairfield County, they still deserve a highlight. They sling classic New York-style pies, cooked just a touch closer to a New Haven-style (i.e., a little more charred than the usual NY slice). Their crust is flaky and chewy, (with an excellent crumb), and their ingredients are fresh and tasty. In my book, that’s a win.

Sophie’s Pizza Bar

Once again, we find ourselves looking at a joint that does quite a lot right. While they don’t have the history of Pepe’s or Colony, nor the price point of Primo, their pies are quite good. They lean into a more modern take on the classic Italian-American joint, offering crispy pies, luxuriously rich tomato sauces, and a handful of tapas, sandwiches, and the like that all pull from Italian cuisine.

I won’t tell you that their pies are to die for, but I will tell you that a nice slice with a cheeky cocktail is precisely what the doctor ordered. (I’m the doctor in this case, but still). So swing by Sophie’s Pizza Bar for consistently tasty, high-quality pies — it’s worth the wait.
