Here comes yet another sleek, must-have pizza oven from Ooni. The Ooni Koda 16 is our pick for the best overall pizza oven.

The Ooni Koda 16 is a gas-powered outdoor pizza oven with a cooking surface large enough to fit a 16-inch pizza. The cordierite baking stone retains heat impressively well and, together with the L-shaped flame, gives your crust the perfect amount of crisp and char.

A fresh, stone-baked pizza takes just 60 seconds to cook thanks to the high temperatures inside the oven. The Koda 16 can reach temperatures as high as 500 degrees Celsius (932 degrees Fahrenheit) in just 20 minutes. This means that in addition to cooking at temperatures twice as high as a conventional oven, the Koda 16 drastically cuts down on cooking time.

The Ooni Koda 16 is excellent for cooking so much more than just pizza. Its wide opening makes it easy to transfer meat, poultry, vegetables, bread, desserts, and more to and from the oven. With the heat control dial, you can easily adjust the temperature inside the oven to suit the meal you’re cooking. And because the oven runs on gas, there is very little clean-up required once the oven cools down. Read the full review here.

Best Portable: Gozney Roccbox Outdoor Pizza Oven

"Worlds first portable restaurant-style pizza oven"

Good 👍

  • From the manufacture of restaurant-grade pizza oven makers, this oven also delivers its best to its domestic customers. It is popular for its perfect restaurant-like results, even for users with little or no experience in baking. It is easy to use and very user-friendly.
  • Wood and gas attachments do not require complex assembly.
  • It includes a thermometer with it.
  • Fast Cooking Time
  • Due to heavy steel jacketing around it, the temperatures can be retained for longer periods.

Bad 👎

  • Less portable compared to other alternatives mainly due to its weight.

This oven is being marketed as the world's first portable restaurant-style pizza oven by Gozney themselves.

It is quite easy to set up and can take up to 20 to 30 mins to be completely functional. Should you face any problem setting it up, there is plenty of help online for this oven. Once the gas is attached, the temperature can build up to 500 C in few minutes, as shown by the built-in thermometer.

The Roccbox is heavier than many of its competitors, but keep in mind that the weight of the Roccbox is due to the unrivaled levels of insulation and the thick stone floor, both of which are naturally weighty. In addition, thin stone floors (allowing for lighter ovens overall) and less insulation, which is normal in other ovens, means that the pizza is often not thoroughly cooked on its base.

The lack of insulation in some of the competitor ovens means that the flame has to be closer to the pizza to cook it. Note how rounded the Roccbox ceiling is compared to the flatness of other ovens. That’s because other ovens need to force the flame downwards lower towards the pizza to cook it. This is why often the toppings are burnt, but the base isn’t properly cooked in some of the cheaper ovens.

One of the added benefits of this oven is that it comes with the option of both gas and wood-burning. Wood burning will satisfy your cravings to have a perfect restaurant-flavored pizza. However, it is easier to control and achieve temperatures with gas power than wood-burning. There is only room for one pizza at a time, but the cooking time is fast. Moreover, you would not need to heat it again for the next one because of the thick stone. Read our full Roccbox review here.

Zio Ciro Subito Cotto 100 Wood/Gas Pizza Oven

Advertised as “the largest transportable wood or gas oven,” the Subito Cotto 100 by Zio Ciro is a powerful wood or gas pizza oven that is 100% made in Italy.

The Subito Cotto pizza oven has an internal diameter of 39 inches, or 100 centimeters, which is large enough to cook 4 or 5 pizzas at the same time. This oven was designed to make authentic Italian pizza the traditional way but is also great for making bread, desserts, roasts, and more.

The Subito Cotto arrives fully assembled but does require a lengthy curing process before you can cook with it for the first time. This wood/gas version includes a burner that can be used with natural gas, propane, LPG, or methane.

Good 👍

  • Retains heat for longer – The Subito Cotto pizza oven by Zio Ciro is made of high-quality refractory concrete, rather than stainless steel. Because of its thermal properties, the concrete retains heat for longer than a stainless-steel dome. This means the food inside your oven can continue cooking for long after the flame has gone out.

Bad 👎

  • Long preheat time – It takes nearly an hour for the Subito Cotto Wood/Gas Pizza Oven to reach its maximum temperature of 850 degrees Fahrenheit (454 degrees Celsius). Other popular pizza oven brands, like Ooni, offer pizza ovens that preheat to even higher temperatures in 20 minutes or less.

Curing required before first use – Zio Ciro recommends curing the Subito Cotto pizza oven before you cook with it. As explained on their website, the curing process gradually removes any humidity that may have accumulated in the oven while it was being built and assembled. Curing your oven prevents large, structural cracks that can cause major problems with your pizza oven. Zio Ciro suggests a curing schedule that takes, at minimum, several hours to complete.

Though visually not very appealing, this one gives very authentic pizza results. It is an electric pizza oven. Unfortunately, its pizza oven temperature is not up to par with its rivals as it can only reach a temperature of 450F. Therefore, the oven is not ideal for cooking Neapolitan pizzas, which require higher temperatures and shorter cooking times. Instead, it is a perfect choice for pizzas with a thick crust that do not require higher temperatures and short cooking time.

The issue is also common among other shelf top indoor ovens. One of the advantages of this model is that it is very spacious, which allows you to make larger pies. It is best to have one if you are a frequent party thrower.

It is a moderately priced oven and costs around $400. It has a very perfectly shaped body with very stable supports. One of the added benefits of it that the heat generated by it can be used to charge your mobile devices. It also has a LED light attached to it, which allows it to be used comfortably in dark areas. This is great to maintain a constant temperature within the oven and prevent your food from being overcooked or undercooked. The fuel is very easy to add.

The instructions about the size of wood are given in the booklet. One of the biggest drawbacks of the machine is that only one pizza can be cooked at one time, and it may take 5 to 6 mins to cook the pizza. However, it is also a great choice for a backyard pizza oven. These ovens are similar to the Blackstone pizza oven, which is now discontinued.

Types of Pizza ovens

A pizza oven at your home can be of various types based on its location, mobility, and power source.

Indoor ovens

Wood-fired pizza ovens are the best when it comes to the taste of the pizza. But they are expensive to built and not suitable for indoors.

Here then come the indoor pizza ovens, which are very convenient. These ovens are much smaller and more practical to be installed indoors. Of course, they cost you much less.

These indoor pizza ovens are mostly gas or electric-powered and can also bake a variety of foods. They could be either shaped as circular pans that are either heated by an electric source or directly placed in the stove. They can also be shaped as traditional ovens with a door opening outside, and grills are placed inside.

Indoor pizza ovens are typically powered by gas or electricity. These types of pizza ovens offer convenience and portability and can be used to cook a lot more than just pizza. The Smart Oven Pizzaiolo is a countertop oven that reaches a maximum temperature of 750 degrees in just two minutes, but it will set you back a hefty $800.

The Presto Pizzazz Plus Rotating Oven is a more affordable indoor pizza oven that reaches temperatures as high as 930 degrees in just 60 seconds, but because it isn’t enclosed, it isn’t the best option for pizza lovers who crave a light, airy crust.

The Wisco 421 Pizza Oven takes upwards of 10 minutes to reach 450 degrees, which means it doesn’t heat up as quickly or get as hot as other indoor pizza ovens. However, it is spacious enough for larger pies and works especially well when baking thick-crust pizza.

The Breville Crispy Crust Pizza Maker is one of the most compact options and heats to 660 degrees in minutes. Unfortunately, this indoor pizza oven is frustratingly difficult to clean.

Outdoor pizza ovens

Outdoor pizza oven comes with the benefit of wood-burning capacity, which allows getting the perfect taste and flavor. They are usually bulky and not portable. They are not very convenient to set up. However, once set up, they are not very difficult to operate. They are usually expensive than indoor pizza ovens. However, they give you the great capability to cook on a large scale.

They can reach up to high temperatures. However, the time to achieve these temperate may be higher than the indoor pizza ovens. Usually, these ovens have traditionally come with only a temporary door placed in front of the opening, which is quite small compared to the size of the oven. For outdoor use, you can also make a DIY pizza oven with mud.

Outdoor pizza ovens tend to be much bulkier and more expensive than indoor pizza ovens and aren’t portable. However, most outdoor pizza ovens are easy to use once they are set up. The most popular outdoor pizza ovens include the Ooni Pro, the Biolite Basecamp Pizza Dome, the Camp Chef Italia Artisan Pizza Oven, and the Gozney Roccbox Outdoor Pizza Oven.

The Ooni Pro reaches temperatures high enough to cook a pizza in 60 seconds or less. The Biolite Basecamp Pizza Dome is a wood-burning oven with a ceramic stone accessory that can be used to bake pizza.

The Camp Chef Italia Artisan Pizza Oven runs on gas and is portable and easy to use. The Gozney Roccbox Outdoor Pizza Oven is a restaurant-style, portable pizza oven that runs on either gas or wood.

Wood-fired pizza oven.

Wood-fired pizza ovens use pallets of dry wood to heat the oven. They can reach up to 400 to 450 F within five minutes. They produce smoke which can enrich your pizza with the flavors. They can also serve as a fireplace at parties.

These pizza ovens are powered by electricity. In most cases, they are placed indoors. They are the cleanest way of making pizza, but with them, you can never achieve the flavor of a restaurant-grade pizza.

In this article, we have listed the pros and cons of each type of model, along with a brief overview. The oven you want to buy depends on your desires. For example, if you want a restaurant-grade pizza, you may have to go for an outdoor pizza oven. Of course, it would be heavier on your pocket, but if you can afford why not go for it. The other cheaper options are electric indoor ovens which can also give a perfect-looking and tasty pizza.

But if I really had to pick one, I would go for the Ooni Karu 16 all day long! Nothing really comes close to it.
